American intelligence and State Department officials, some anonymous, have denied any connection with the assassination yesterday of Iranian physicist Masoud Ali-Mohammadi, in Tehran. Meanwhile, The Washington Post reports that Ali-Mohammadi was among several Iranian researchers who had regular contacts with Israeli and Arab physicists, through a United Nations-sponsored scientific collaboration project based in Amman, Jordan. The program, known as Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME), was focused on non-nuclear physics applications in the medical industry and nanotechnology. To further complicate the issue, the Iranian opposition issued a report late last night saying that photographs taken at the scene of the bombing shortly after the blast, reveal the presence at the site of Abu Nasser Hossein, assistant to Manif Ashmar, who is Hezbollah’s public face in Iran. It is also important to note that, although Ali-Mohammadi was a physicist, and a senior faculty member at the University of Tehran, his research interests had nothing to do with nuclear studies. One scientific observer reports that, “[i]f Ali-Mohammadi did work on nuclear bombs in his spare time, the evidence certainly isn’t in his published journal work, [which] explored [abstract ideas] concerning [things like] gravity and the belief that our universe continues to expand at an accelerated rate”.
This is rapidly turning into a game of “Cluedo”… I think it was Col. Mustard in the laboratory with the motorbike.
The excellent PBS Tehran Bureau has more detail on Ali-Mohammadi’s political views and actions:

The penultimate paragraph, seemingly written in ignorance of the Abu Nasser connection mentioned here, is strikingly concordant with the Hezbollah hypothesis.
Typical Iranian Denial of Conscience and their Guilt moves on to another Place in their Agenda. Didn’t the Iranian Government Threaten Israel and The West? Maybe somebody around the other side of the Equation decided that Iran wasn’t doing a Good enough Job of Threatening the Free World. You know that Al-Qaeda is Known for Killing its own Kind and so does the Taliban too. Maybe just another Terrorist Kid decided to leave His Bomb laden Bicycle there before Class. Poor and Pitiful Demoralization is Coming down on these Terrorists and they are needing a Tiny Violin to play for them, Their heart Bleeds for Us. God Bless The Best. More to come.

Interesting, if true — which it very probably is.
