FBI allegedly looking for Russian spy inside NSA

NSA Headquarters

By IAN ALLEN | intelNews.org |
American counterintelligence investigators are allegedly trying to uncover at least one Russian-handled double agent operating inside the US National Security Agency (NSA), according to information published on Wednesday in The Washington Times. The paper based its allegation on an interview with an anonymous “former intelligence official” with close ties to the NSA —America’s largest intelligence agency, which is tasked with worldwide communications surveillance as well as communications security. The anonymous source told the Times that the probe is directly connected to the arrest of nearly a dozen Russian deep-cover operatives by the FBI last summer. Washington eventually exchanged the Russian spies with several Western-handled Russian operatives captured by Moscow and held in Russian prisons. But the FBI allegedly believes that the deep-cover operatives, most of whom used false identity papers and had lived in the US for years, were primarily tasked with aiding at least one Russian-handled double spy operating inside the NSA’s Forge George F. Meade headquarters, in the US state of Maryland. The anonymous intelligence source said that, not only the FBI, but the NSA is also “convinced” that “one or more Russian spies” are active inside the Agency, as well as perhaps in other Pentagon-affiliated intelligence agencies, including the Defense Intelligence Agency. The Times contacted NSA and FBI representatives in connection with the anonymous revelations, but both agencies refused comment.

Am I the only person who finds it amusing the the one agency responsible for prevention of cyber attacks falls prey to HUMINT security flaws? Shows you right there what’s wrong with the IC’s current focus

  2. Peter Wallerberger says:

You can focus all you like on Human failings – but how do you know
that even those directing such intense scrutiny in such an area of threat
are not themselves actually the ‘hunters’ as well as the prey – Joshua ??
It’s not amusing – it’s twisted and scary and reality !! A potential threat that will never go away wether the guard is up or down.
As an aside – it is not surpriseing the FBI don’t feel inclined to comment –
it’s not a subject they are comfortable with !!

  3. Bob Bostinto says:

This is the cost of doing business so to speak. Nothing new. ..it makes life interesting thats all.
In the case of NSA, it’s been going on since 1952.

  4. Joshua Engelman says:

My apologies for any misunderstanding Peter, I was merely criticizing the overemphasis of SIGINT when targets use word of mouth and live in caves on the Pakistani border. From the SVR’s perspective, it is important to keep an eye on us because they think we are funding the Chechens, which we probably are, and they also wish to gain international goodwill by capturing our targets before we do. As Bob pointed out, this is not particularly scary or shocking, it is simply the reality of the modern intelligence world. I suggest you read up on the current state and goals of the illegals program of the Sluzhba Vneshney Razvedki
